When a wheel bearing begins to fail, continuing to drive can quickly turn a mechanical problem into a serious safety issue. Falkirk Recovery was recently called to provide Luton van recovery from Alloa to Bo’ness after the vehicle developed a badly worn wheel bearing that was close to collapsing.

With the van no longer safe to continue driving, the customer arranged for us to recover it from Alloa and transport it directly to their preferred garage in Bo’ness for repairs.

Vehicle: Ford Transit Luton Van

Recovery Location: Alloa

Destination: Customer’s Preferred Garage, Bo’ness

Luton Van Recovery from Alloa to Bo’ness

We were contacted after the customer discovered that the wheel bearing on their Luton van had deteriorated to the point where it was close to collapsing.

At this stage, attempting to drive the van from Alloa to Bo’ness could have caused significantly more damage and potentially resulted in the affected wheel becoming unstable.

The safest option was therefore professional Luton van recovery from Alloa to Bo’ness, keeping the vehicle completely off the road for the journey to the garage.

Our 7.5-tonne tilt-and-slide recovery truck is particularly useful for jobs like this, giving us the capacity to recover larger commercial vehicles that may be unsuitable for smaller recovery trucks.

Safely Loading the Luton Van

Extra care is important when recovering a vehicle with a badly damaged wheel bearing.

The Luton van was carefully loaded onto the recovery bed while minimising unnecessary movement of the affected wheel. Once positioned correctly, the vehicle was securely strapped down and checked before beginning the journey to Bo’ness.

As the photos show, a Luton-bodied Transit is a considerably larger load than the average car or small van, making the correct recovery equipment particularly important.

Once secured, we transported the van from Alloa to the customer’s chosen garage in Bo’ness, where it was unloaded ready for the wheel bearing to be repaired.

Why You Shouldn't Ignore a Failing Wheel Bearing

Wheel bearings allow the wheels to rotate smoothly while supporting the weight of the vehicle. As they deteriorate, drivers may notice humming, grinding or rumbling noises that become more noticeable with road speed.

A severely worn bearing can develop excessive movement and, in extreme cases, potentially fail completely.

If you suspect a wheel bearing is badly damaged, particularly on a heavier commercial vehicle, arranging recovery can be considerably safer than attempting to drive the vehicle to a garage.
