A warning light followed by a sudden loss of power can quickly turn an ordinary journey into a roadside breakdown — particularly when it happens on a motorway.

Falkirk Recovery was recently called out for a Motorway Recovery M876 job involving this Nissan NV van after it developed an engine-management fault and went into limp mode.

With the van no longer suitable to continue its journey, we recovered it from the M876 and transported it safely to M.R. Vehicle Repairs in Grangemouth for diagnosis.

The garage subsequently identified the problem as an injector fault.

Nissan Van Breaks Down on the M876

The customer had been travelling when the Nissan developed an engine-management warning light and entered limp mode.

Limp mode is designed to restrict a vehicle's performance when its management system detects certain faults. While the vehicle may sometimes continue to move, significantly reduced performance can make continuing a journey unsuitable — especially on a fast-moving motorway.

With the Nissan experiencing these symptoms on the M876, recovery was arranged rather than attempting to continue driving the van.

Motorway Recovery M876

We attended the Nissan and prepared it for transportation using our 7.5-tonne tilt-and-slide recovery truck.

Once loaded onto the recovery bed, the van was securely strapped before being transported away from the motorway.

Our Motorway Recovery M876 service covers cars and light commercial vehicles suffering mechanical problems, electrical faults, punctures, accident damage and other issues that leave them unable to safely complete their journey.

For business owners and tradespeople, getting a broken-down van recovered quickly is particularly important because every hour the vehicle is off the road can potentially mean lost working time.

Nissan NV Transported to Grangemouth

The customer wanted the Nissan taken to M.R. Vehicle Repairs in Grangemouth, so we transported the van directly there for professional diagnosis.

Rather than simply dropping the vehicle at the nearest available location, customers using Falkirk Recovery can normally choose the garage or repairer they would like their vehicle transported to.

In this case, that meant taking the Nissan from the M876 to Grangemouth.

Injector Fault Diagnosed

Once the Nissan reached the garage and could be properly assessed, the problem was diagnosed as an injector fault.

An engine-management warning light and limp mode can have numerous possible causes, so the warning light itself doesn't tell you exactly what has failed. Proper diagnostic testing is required to identify the underlying problem.

For this Nissan, recovering the vehicle to a garage allowed the fault to be correctly diagnosed without risking further problems by attempting to continue the journey.

The M876 is an important connection between the Falkirk area and Scotland's wider motorway network, connecting with the M80 and providing access towards the M9.

A breakdown on any motorway requires additional care because of traffic speeds and the potential dangers associated with remaining near live traffic.

If your vehicle develops a problem on a motorway, follow the appropriate motorway safety guidance and contact emergency services where there is an immediate danger.
